Project Brief: For my graphic design history class, the class was asked to find one style from history and try to recreate that style in the context of a series.
Strategy: I chose to work in the style of American graphic designer Saul Bass (1920-1996). I chose three movie posters created within the past ten years and molded them to fit the clean, geometric style like that of Bass’s.
Directors at Bass’s peak were floored by his ability to break a story down to its bare essence – a visual reduction of the intense plot. Bass’s thick contour lines and bold swatches of color snatched a viewer’s attention whereas other posters at the time would simply try to overwhelm it with a melange of text and image scattered across the composition.
The movie posters I chose to remaster were Bullet Train (2022), Midsommar (2019), & Get Out (2017). I chose these in particular because I feel that their posters were too cluttered with images, as many posters are now. I would like to bring back the simple illustrative posters of Bass to breathe some life into these posters that represent very interesting movies. Additionally, all three movies are dark thrillers, a genre that Bass often designed for.
The Bullet Train poster was accepted into the 2023 WORK National Juried Show.
