Project Brief: Tailfeathers is a project to brand an outdoor entertainment venue intended for the people of Jacksonville. Tailfeathers will consist of a restaurant, ice creamery, mini golf course, arcade, & mini amphitheater. It will have open access to the facility, as in no fee to gain entry unless participating in one of its many activities. It is intended to be an open outdoor social space where both college students and families of Jacksonville, AL, can have a place to have fun for a low cost and without having to travel far. Tailfeathers was the subject of my BFA Seminar show. My hope for this project is that it will not only enrich the lives of college students in Jacksonville but also inspire a broader conversation about the role of design in promoting change in a city.

Strategy: The idea for Tailfeathers and its visuals is driven by insights from my research on the transformative power of green spaces, community, and recreation in enhancing the mental health and academic performance of college students. It will be a vibrant outdoor venue where college students can unwind. Specifically, Tailfeathers will consist of a restaurant + bar, ice creamery, mini-golf course, arcade, open-air pavilion, & mini amphitheater. Tailfeathers’s branding incorporates elements of nature into its design and a soothing color palette helps to evoke tranquility, inviting visitors to escape the pressures of life outside its doors. It is intended to be a place where students can escape the pressures of academia and reconnect with nature, themselves, and their peers. The inclusion of native birds in Tailfeathers’s imagery reinforces the outdoor-focused nature of the facility and its location. Named after Jacksonville's most important birds, the golden eagle and the gamecock, Tailfeathers pays homage to the city's rich heritage and also offers an “easy-going” atmosphere.
