Women in Type
Graphic Design History Research Final + Editorial Spread
Oct. 2022
Skills Used: Research, Editorial Layout, Typography Design + Layout
Project Brief: Over the course of my Graphic Design History class, I researched on a topic of my choosing and was asked to make an editorial layout of my paper. The paper had to cover historical and contemporary aspects of the topic.
Strategy: I chose to write on women in the field of typography because it's a topic that's not widely covered. As quoted on the first page, Laura Webber wrote in 1997: "One must refer to many sources to compile a list of women typeface designers. In an age of rapid access to all sorts of reference information, it seems silly that one must be forced to search many sources and possibly never find all they are looking for." This still held true in 2022! I had a rather difficult time compiling sources to use for this paper. Nevertheless, I took Interlibrary Loans from other colleges and compiled a list of books that were outstanding resources to my research.
If you have some free time, please take a read of "Women in Type". I recommend viewing the below e-book at full screen for the best viewing experience.
This paper was presented at Jacksonville State University's Student Symposium in 2023.
