Carole King: Tapestry
Album Redesign
Sep. 2023
Skills Used: Illustration, Graphic Design, Typography Design + Layout
Project Brief: A remastered version of Tapestry (1971) by Carole King was set to be released and a new, refreshing design of the album was needed to rejuvenate the album and make it appeal to both an original and contemporary audience.
Strategy: Since Tapestry is such an intimate album from Carole, I decided to go with an up-close portrait of her face that makes the viewer feel like she's in the room with you. The album also has themes of femininity, so variations of pink and purple were selected for the color palette as they both can represent femininity. Lastly, Tapestry is seen widely as an unfinished portrait of Carole's life, so there is an unfinished, sketchy quality to the curly locks of her hair. As listeners know, Tapestry was the start of a long, successful road for King. It made history for women in music.
This project was granted a 2023 Award of Design Excellence by the FL3TCH3R Exhibit.
